Slip Resistant Steel Perforated Plate Installed in Manufacturing Facility

The Situation

In the spring of 1925, the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company merged and formed the new Caterpillar Tractor Company. Caterpillar was originally headquartered in San Leandro, CA but relocated to Peoria, IL in 1930. Peoria also became a manufacturing hub for Caterpillar, with four major manufacturing plants in the area doing everything from manufacturing engines to assembling tractors.

Manufacturing plants can very easily be hazardous places. Some of the most common hazards are: slip, trip and fall hazards; confined spaces; heavy machinery; and dangerous chemicals. Caterpillar is committed to the safety of its employees and works to minimize the hazards within its manufacturing plants. To help mitigate slip hazards throughout the Peoria area plants, Caterpillar turned to SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring for a variety of projects.

The Solution

One example of how Caterpillar has utilized SlipNOT® was a recent project that required (6) 48" x 96" x 1/8" thick steel perforated plates. Before the perforated plates were sent to Caterpillar, SlipNOT® applied its Grade 2 steel coating and painted them black. The Grade 2 coating exceeds all standards and recommended guidelines for slip resistance and is a common solution for mitigating slip hazards in manufacturing plants. The perforated plates were then fabricated and installed in several areas, including an oily drain area and a steel hatch door. Since the installation of SlipNOT®, the drain area has been walked on daily with no issues and the steel hatch door is no longer a slip hazard.

The Impact

According to a project team supervisor, SlipNOT® products cover thousands of square feet of work surfaces within Caterpillar's manufacturing plants. It has been installed over a variety of existing flooring options, including grating, concrete, wood block floors, and smooth steel surfaces. Stairs that were previously slip hazards have had SlipNOT® retrofitted over the existing treads and it is "just a world of difference." SlipNOT® is trusted throughout Caterpillar's manufacturing plants to keep employees on their feet and the project team supervisor feels it is a "great product, period."
