Does your food grade flooring pass this simple “Dos and Don’ts” list? T.W. Hicks, a company based out of Texas, wrote this blog on how to make sure you are installing the best flooring in your food processing facility. SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring products gets a check mark for each category as it passes all of their suggested requirements!
- Do choose an USDA, NSF, and/or EPA approved flooring. Each one of these organizations have their own set of requirements that a flooring must meet in order to be considered safe to use in food handling or food processing environments. There are certain chemicals and materials that should not be in the flooring as it may be detrimental to the consumable end product. SlipNOT® products are registered by NSF International for use in the food processing facilities and have received many approvals and certifications from other organizations. Take a look at the product registration letters provided by NSF International.
- Don’t overlook the floors texture. Flooring in the food processing industry tends to be frequently wet and slippery. Choosing a surface that has a medium to high amount of traction is extremely important in this specific environment. SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring products provide a high traction surface that stays non slip even when covered with liquids. The all metal surface far exceeds all of the standards and requirements for slip resistant surfaces set by various organizations including ASTM, ANSI, NFPA, OSHA and ADA. Specific test results are displayed on the SlipNOT® website.
- Do consider odor. Nobody wants their food tasting like the flooring in the facility it was manufactured in. Often time the odor of the flooring is overlooked and newly placed flooring may have a strong smell that can permeate into the food that is being prepared over it. SlipNOT® products are made completely of metal and have no odor.
- Don’t skimp on durability. Flooring in a food processing plant needs to be able to stand up to high traffic and numerous cleanings a day, often with harsh chemicals. Because of its clean-ability, the most highly used metal in food processing plants is stainless steel. SlipNOT® offers a stainless steel non slip product that is used in thousands of food processing plants around the nation. The stainless steel surface is the most chemically resistant surface offered. It can withstand nearly all chemical or environmental situations from alkaline to acidic. A power washer and a stiff bristle brush may be needed to dislodge grease or other debris from the high traction surface. The non slip surface does not contain any grit so there is no worry about pieces breaking off and contaminating the end product. Specific cleaning instructions are also available on the website.
SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring has provided safety flooring for a plethora of different types of food processing facilities. From meat, soda, pasta and dairy plants, to breweries and commercial kitchens; SlipNOT® case studies provide specific examples and pictures of these environments.
