Federal Data on Public Safety Activities Available to Public

In May of 2012 the Federal Government launched a new initiative and website called Safety.Data.Gov.  This was launched during Transportation Safety Week.  OSHA and the Department of Transportation worked together on the initiative which hopes to provide the public with better access to federal safety data.  They are hoping that as the public becomes more aware of the safety issues out there, new and innovative ideas will be created that will impact public safety.

The site consists of blogs, data, forums, apps and resources about workplace safety, road place safety and crime among other topics.  As smart phones are becoming a staple in society, this website offers apps for mobile phones such as a Recall App which informs users of any recalls, WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) designed to help assist first responders, and a child safety seat inspections station locator.  Safety.Data.Gov is also has a tab for challenges for the public.  One challenge that is currently going on includes a grand prize of $15,000 to a designer that can come up with an app that helps demonstrate the importance of knowing about workplace safety or assisting young people in workplace rights.  This website shows that the Federal Government is starting to use technology more and more to engage the public in important matters.
