Key Stair Coverings Information

According to the University of New Mexico’s Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention Program, “Standardization of steps and ramps is needed to prevent accidents.  Pedestrians need to have stairs and steps which are predictable in construction to avoid falling.  Walkways which change in slope and have unmarked single steps should be avoided.  Risers and treads should be uniform and have uniform dimensions to avoid tripping.  All treads and nosings shall be of slip resistant material.”  Stair coverings, like customized or retrofitted treads and nosings, must have a slip resistant material applied to them in order to ensure for a safe walking surface to avoid accidents.

Metal non-slip stair coverings, like the ones manufactured by SLIPNOT®, have a coefficient of friction greater than or equal to 0.85 which far surpasses the general standard of 0.5.  Stair coverings with this slip resistant coating provide the traction needed from foot-to-surface to keep pedestrians and employees on their feet.  In my opinion metal non-slip stair coverings are well worth the initial cost.  Paint on or tape on stair coverings may provide an inexpensive “quick fix” to slippery stairs, but these products do not provide long lasting protection and must be replaced often.

Commercial and industrial facilities should include non-slip stair coverings on their stairs to provide ease of walking for both pedestrians and employees alike.  This will not only allow workers to work with confidence, but will allow the public to feel safe, regardless of weather conditions.
