Amazon and the NSC collaborate for women in safety

Amazon and the National Safety Council (NSC) are working together to increase the number of women in the safety industry. Right now only 19% of safety industry workers are women and they tend to earn less than their male counterparts. According to the article on EHS Today women only account for 22% of those that are certified with a safety professional designation from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

In the article, Heather MacDougall, the Vice President of Worldwide Workplace Health and Safety at Amazon states, “Innovation in the safety industry thrives when diverse people, including women, bring their voices to the table. From hourly associates to upper management and leadership, women have critical roles at Amazon and significantly strengthen our safety program. We’re proud to support the NSC mission to recognize and provide resources to women in the safety industry.”

Amazon is giving $125,000 to the NSC in order to support three of their initiatives:

  • The Council’s Marion Martian Award that recognizes women safety professionals who have attained professional excellence in their specialty area and who help other women in the safety profession succeed.
  • The Women in Safety Scholarship Program which offers scholarships for women studying workplace safety. They also provide the funds for the recipient to attend the NSC Congress and Expo.  This scholarship is renewable.
  • The Women’s Division that provides networking opportunities with some of the top female safety professionals worldwide.

Lorraine M. Martin, NSC president and CEO states, “Data shows that an organization with a diverse workforce is more likely to outperform those without diversity. We know women are an important part of that equation.” SLIPNOT Metal Safety Flooring also feels strongly about women being involved in the safety profession. SLIPNOT is a women owned company and is WBENC (Women’s Business Enterprise National Council) certified.  We applaud Amazon for specifically selecting the scholarship and recognizing the importance of women in safety.
