ASSE Name Change

After more than 100 years, the ASSE (American Society of Safety Engineers) has changed its name and branding to the ASSP; American Society of Safety Professionals.  This change reflects the diverse membership of professionals that play an important part in workplace safety and leaves room for growth as the organization continues to change and evolve.

The organization was first started in 1911 as the United Association of Casualty Inspectors, after 146 workers died in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, the deadliest industrial disaster in NY City’s history.  It was changed to the ASSE in 1914.

Over the past century, the organization has played a huge role in organizing and standardizing safety procedures and workplace safety standards.  In an article on www.ehstoday.com, the ASSP president states, “We’re evolving with our profession to stay at the forefront of workplace safety advancements.”  Members range from individuals involved with hazard identification, risk management, worker’s compensation, injury prevention, as well as those improving the organization of worker and safety performance.

Along with the name change came a new logo, an updated website (www.assp.org), and a revamped social media presence.  It’s exciting the see the change that comes along with over a 100 years of experience and leadership!
