Galvanized Steel Expansion Joint Covers Help Extend Life of Historic Bridge

The Situation

The Healdsburg Memorial Bridge was originally built in 1921 to carry the historic Redwood Highway across the Russian River in Sonoma County, CA. The building of US Route 101 diverted a lot of traffic away from the bridge, leaving it to mostly local traffic. In 1990, the city government of Healdsburg started planning a replacement bridge, which was not received well by the community. This caused the new bridge plans to be scrapped. In April 2011, the bridge was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, followed by plans for restoration in December 2011. State and federal funding was approved to restore the bridge, but the funds were contingent on the city providing for the ongoing maintenance of the bridge. Seismic retrofitting and restoration were completed in 2015 with maintenance continuing on into the future. Today, the bridge is used by over 7,000 vehicles a day as well as pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Solution

As part of the ongoing maintenance of the bridge, a construction company contacted SlipNOT® to assist with expansion joint covers. After reviewing specifications, SlipNOT® provided (2) 3/8" x 12" x 78" steel plates coated in Grade 2 steel that were then hot dip galvanized to provide corrosion resistance, limiting the amount of maintenance the joints will need in the future.

SlipNOT® expansion joint covers are approved by agencies such as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Examples of their applications can be found in Tallahassee, FL, Jacksonville, FL, and McKinney, TX.

The Impact

The Healdsburg Memorial Bridge is one of only thirteen Pennsylvania Truss bridges left in the country that still carry vehicle traffic. With the restoration and ongoing maintenance of the bridge, this piece of history will survive long into the future. The installation of the expansion joint covers with SlipNOT® Grade 2 galvanized steel increases the safety of those who still use the bridge by providing slip resistance, easy cleanablity, and corrosion resistance.
